Newsweek, July 20, 2024. House Speaker Mike Johnson, a Louisiana Republican, floated the notion on Sunday of investigating Democrats over what he called a "big cover-up" about President Joe Biden's decimated health. Speaking with host Jake Tapper on CNN's State of the Union, Johnson said Democrats have "prevented the people from seeing what people in close proximity have seen."

"Now that the cat is out of the bag, you can hear from the Republican speaker to affirm what everyone else has known and seen," Johnson said. "The Democrats have been involved in a big cover-up here. He's not the Joe Biden that he was four years ago when he ran for office. He's not capable of doing it now."

The House speaker added: "And it's not his fault. No one can help how they age and how their faculties diminish. But that's clearly happening here and that's something that must be contended with."

Tapper immediately followed-up on Johnson's "cover-up" remark, asking the House speaker if "an investigation by Congress or even law enforcement" is something he's considered.

Johnson said "that is something we've discussed."

He added: "Until the debate three weeks ago, you've seen in recent weeks, House Democrats and others coming on TV, regularly, saying things like 'Joe Biden is running circles around us, and he can compete in the Olympics.' It's just comical. They all knew that wasn't true.

"Every time, I'd see one of those statements, I couldn't believe they were doing it. And that is why they got him through the process of winning the primary, because they put up a false pretense about his capabilities, now the whole country sees it, and they've painted themselves in a corner because they did that."

Biden appeared to lose his train of thought mid-sentence several times during the June 27 presidential debate against Republican nominee Donald Trump. The president's team later said he had a cold and was suffering from jet lag. In the following weeks, prominent Democrats, including members of Congress and actor George Clooney, a top party donor, publicly called for Biden to stand aside to let a different nominee run. Biden and his top advisers, however, have insisted he is not dropping out of the race.
